The chapter will be canceled and is no longer relevant to the audit.

3.5.1      Monitoring and care of livestock (k.o.)
In accordance with § 11 paragraph 8 Animal Welfare Law, every livestock owner must assure due to the self assessment, that § 2 of the Animal Welfare Law will be fulfilled. In particular appropriate animal related properties (animal protection indicators) must be collected and evaluated.

Enhancement of requirements for culling non treatable animals: Any non-treatable animal must be stunned and killed without delay in accordance with the Animal Welfare Sacrifice Regulation (EU) N° 1099/2009 in conjunction with prevailing national regulations. When animals have to be culled, measures to prevent avoidable pain, stress and sorrow have to be taken. Every livestock owner must have a company specific written work instruction for animal welfare friendly stunning and killing of animals.

3.5.5      General farming requirements (k.o.)
Clarification: Farming requirements apply both for free range and for indoor housing systems.
Enhancement: Equipment for the illumination, ventilation and supply systems providing equipment must be at least daily checked daily. Defects at facilities and equipment have to be corrected immediately. If that is not possible, measures to protect the health and welfare of the animals have to be implemented until the defects are corrected
Enhancement The animals must not be exposed to direct electricity at no point of the area where the animals are kept. Exceptions are temporary limited measures on the basis of veterinary orders that are present.

3.5.6      Shed floor (k.o.)
The criteria is now recaluated to a k.o..-criteria.

3.5.8      Lighting
Enhancement: Artificial light in sheds needs to be flicker-free, to proof that the artificial light is flicker-free, a written confirmation from the electrical contractor, or a certificate or technical description of the used lamps are required.

3.5.9      Space allowances (k.o)
Calculation of stock density using the information from the slaughter settlement or bill and stock documentation on shed surface (interior surface): The usable shed surface is the floor surface which is available to the poultries without restriction. The installation of a second level in order to increase the space allowances is possible, if this area is properly spread with litter and both areas (first and second level) are completely in line with the requirements of a usable shed surface. In turkey production perforated levels are also accepted, if both the second and the first level are animal friendly usable.
The surface under troughs can be included as usable surface, if these have adjustable heights and it is ensured there is unrestricted water and feed access from the 21st day on, and the feed and drinking facilities are continuously at the height of the poultries’ backs. For Peking ducks, areas under feed, water and other shed facilities are included as usable surfaces if the poultries can pass below or above those facilities.

II.        QS-Revision 2017 Hatchery

2.6.1      Hygiene and professional training (k.o.)
Enhancement: Trainings on general knowledge of the handling of viable chicks and the selection and killing of unviable chicks have to take place semi-annually (at intervals of six month), so that the expert knowledge is currently given.

3.1.1      Traceability (k.o.)
Enhancement: Also when hatching eggs are obtained from hatcheries they have to come from QS-eligible hatcheries.

3.1.8      Identification of QS breeder flocks (k.o.)
If chicks or hatching eggs (e.g. trade of hatching eggs with third persons for the production of QS chicks) are marketed as QS goods in the inspections system, the eligibility of delivery into the QS scheme of the breeding farm/hatcheries has to be checked.

III.     Self-assessment
In case you have not done your QS self-assessment for 2016 yet, please be reminded to do the check until the end of the year!
